Waving Script - Bizhentu (ft. Xu Jing)
EXHIBITION
Waving Script - Bizhentu is an intervention of mind embodiment in calligraphy. It introduces brainwave data as a new calligraphic medium, extending the spirit of calligraphy to the intersection of technology, dance, and Cantonese Opera. Building upon artist Chris Cheung’s (h0nh1m) earlier work, Waving Script, the artwork unfolding within the 360-degree dome space where where a robotic arm moves along spherical trajectories, interacting with the act of writing and integrating brainwave data generated during Cheung’s and calligrapher Xu Jing’s creative process. The piece turns the tension between conscious and unconscious into visuals, exploring calligraphy as a trace of the awareness in nihility. Xu Jing contributes her distinctive “Wine Script”—the oxidation of ink and aged red wine imbues the brushwork with textural variation, elevating the tonal depth of ink to new dimensions.
Waving Script - Bizhentu explores Chinese philosophy; emptiness (空性) of calligraphy between the realms of the intentional (有為) and the unintentional (無為) through its dual modes of “exhibition” and “performance.” As the water-sleeve sweeps through the air, generated ink-form projections cascade upon the dancer, each gesture becoming a living brushstroke in motion. Simultaneously, brainwave data and a robotic arm visualise the energy between brushstrokes, interweaving in resonance with the dancer.
