Astro.blksun is a reimagined and remastered audiovisual work based on the original Astro, created for the Metaxis Festival at Planetarium No. 1 in St. Petersburg in 2021, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space. Inspired by a 1970 correspondence between Sister Mary Jucunda and NASA scientist Ernst Stuhlinger, in which space exploration was framed as a way to deepen humanity’s understanding of Earth itself, the work approaches the question of why we explore space through an artistic and speculative lens. Observed from the perspective of an intelligent being in outer space, Earth unfolds across multiple scales, from ecological transformation and climate change to data driven landscapes and algorithmic imagery. The work weaves scientific observation with poetic imagination to reflect on life, technology, and planetary fragility.
